How to Keep Your Skin Clear During “That Time of the Month”

I tend to stay away from TMI-type topics here on the blog for a couple of reasons. One, I don’t want to gross any of you out, and two, I don’t want to gross myself out, lol! When the folks over at Always asked me to share my tips for getting through your period I brought it back to beauty…as I tend to do in most situations. Ha!

It’s actually not much of a stretch, at least not for me, anyway. Every month, without fail, my hormones go haywire and some pimple threatens to erupt on my face. I’ve learned over the years how to keep these pesky period blemishes at bay, and how to camoflauge them if they set up shop anyway. Here are my tips!

• Most women who get period-related blemishes tend to get them in the same spot every month. For me, it’s my chin, so I make sure to give that area extra TLC. I make sure to thoroughly cleanse my skin, remove all makeup and apply a mild blemish treatment to the area.
• If I feel soreness under my skin, I don’t wait for the blemish to hit the surface before treating it. I apply a more intensive blemish treatment product to cut it off at the pass.
• Treat your skin to an at-home facial. Hormones are the cause of pimples during your period, and hormones are also responsible for increased oil production. I make sure to apply a clay mask during that week to absorb any extra oil that can wreak havoc on my skin.
• If a pimple manages to make its way onto your face, concealer can be your best friend. Use an opaque, oil-free concealer (I’ve found that sheer, liquid-y concealers do nothing for disguising blemishes) and gently pat it onto the spot. Apply more in thin layers if you need more coverage and set with a light dusting of powder.
