Bombshell Review: Rimmel Scandal’Eyes Mascara and Glam’Eyes 3D Eyeshadow

Like any self-respecting beauty junkie, I’m always on the hunt for the next great beauty product. One of my longest running beauty obsessions is mascara, specifically volumizing mascara. My lashes are naturally good in the length and curl department, so if a mascara claims to plump up my lashes I’m all over it! Over the years my obsession with volumizing mascaras has lead me everywhere from the department store to the drugstore, and I’ve decided over the last year or so that I’m done paying $20-30 on mascara. Last I checked, I don’t have a trust fund and it’s kind of insane to drop so much cash on something I’m gonna toss every 3 months.

With drugstore brands upping their mascara game over the last couple years, it’s not that hard to find a good mascara for $10 or less. So when I came across Rimmel Scandaleyes Mascara, $7 I decided to give it a go. Here’s what the brand claims:

It’s a Rimmel breakthrough! Who thought a big brush could volumize and define like this? So big yet so precise, our MaxDensity™ brush reveals lashes you never thought you had. 30% wider and denser, with more bristles to capture and coat even the smallest lashes. Combs through clumps for perfect definition.

So did it live up to the hype? In a word, um, not really. Ok, that’s three words. It was really a hot mess. The chief culprit in the hot messiness of it all is this big a** brush. Seriously, this thing is like a billy club. I usually have no problem with big mascara brushes and tend to like them just fine. However, this brush was nearly the size of my eyeball which created all types of problems with application. Not only was it virtually impossible to keep from getting mascara on my eyelids, but formula wasn’t the least bit volumizing. Take a look, and I apologize in advance for my lack of undereye concealer here, lol!

3 coats

See all that mess?! With even 3 coats I got no volume. The brush really did this mascara in. Perhaps if it were a tad smaller it would take less maneuvering to get mascara on lashes instead of lids, and you could build it up to some decent amount of volume. I’ve liked Rimmel mascaras in the past (which is why I bought this one), but this one is pretty unusable for me and I (clearly!) won’t be re-purchasing.

Because the CVS store I was shopping had Rimmel on sale BOGO 50% I decided to grab one of these Rimmel Glam’Eyes HD Eyeshadow Palettes, $6 because I’m a sucker for a pretty neutral eyeshadow! So there’s some good and bad here. The good? These shadows have great pigment and color payoff. The bad? The palette itself is a disaster.

The whole British flag idea is totally cute, but totally impractical. As you can see, it takes some real digging to get the shadow of the tiny triangles and strips. When using my finger or makeup brush I always managed to pick up some of the color from the shade in the neighboring triangle. Sooo irritating.

Such pretty colors, right? I would have like one matte shade (like the dark brown shade) to balance the shimmers and allow me to create an eye look within one palette. But I’ve found that most drugstore palettes have the same aversion to matte shadows in palettes, so I wasn’t too bothered.

While I wasn’t a fan of the Scandal’Eyes mascara, I did like the Glam’Eyes HD Mascara but won’t repurchase unless Rimmel fixes the wonky packaging. What do you think bombshells? Will you give either of these products a try? Do you wear anything from Rimmel?
