Beauty Wrap-Up: Golden Globes 2010
The stars came out in droves for the 2010 Golden Globes, the official kickoff of award season! The Golden Globes is probably my favorite award show because the champagne is flowing, the stars are super relaxed, and some kind of foolery or naughty behavior is bound to pop off in front of the cameras! But my favorite thing about any award show is scoping out the beauty. The brown girls were definitely present and accounted for last Sunday, so let’s break down the beauty and see who had the best looks!
Sam Fine, make-up artist to Black Hollywood, did an impeccable job on Precious star and Golden Globe winner Mo’Nique! I can see Sam’s signature contouring at work on Mo’Nique’s sculpted cheekbones. Her brows are slightly lightened and highly defined, while her subtly smokey eyes were topped off with fringes of thick, lush lashes. Mo’Nique’s bronzed skin was complemented with a mauvey-nude, matte lipstick. Trust me. We are going to see lots of matte lip color in the coming months!
Sam Fine (who is a SUPER-DUPER sweetheart!) was kind enough to share with me the products he used to achieve this uber-glamorous look. Here’s the beauty scoop!
- Sam began by sculpting Mo’Nique’s face using Black Opal Stick Foundation. He then dusted bronzers from MAC and CARGO on cheeks to achieve a glowing complexion.
- Fine used Image Exclusive Fashion Lashes n° 747L to bring out the eyes (NOTE: These lashes come in sizes Small, Medium and Large!) and a beige liner from Shiseido (I believe “Desert Dusk” was the shade used) inside the inner rim of the eye to make it appear wider and whiter.
- Lastly, he topped off her look with YSL Golden Gloss, which contains .02 %of 24 carats gold… perfect for a Golden Globe winner!

Many, many thanks to Sam Fine for responding to a Twitter (@SamFineBeauty) message from ‘lil ‘ole me, and sharing details and photos of his stunning work! If you haven’t checked out Sam’s new instructional DVD, get on it! He spills the beans on his signature makeup techniques and helps you to up your makeup game (you can read my review of the DVD here). The DVD is available at Amazon.com and you can find out more about Sam Fine at SamFine.com.
Sadly, Mo’Nique’s Precious co-star Gabourey Sidibe had a less than stellar look. I absolutely loved the movie Precious, and Gabby Sidibe earned every bit of her Golden Globe nomination (she should have won, if you ask me!). What I like most about her is her sweet personality. In every interview or TV appearance I’ve seen, Gabby is open, down-to-earth, funny and a true girly-girl. This was a big night for her, which is why I was so disappointed in her makeup.

Gabby’s makeup was done by makeup guru Bobbi Brown, which makes it all the more disappointing. In the red carpet picture at right, her foundation is way too red and her skin wasn’t primed or powdered properly, leading to an greasy shine. The only real definition to her eyes are the false lashes, and you can barely detect any color on her gorgeous high cheekbones. Her makeup looked even worse later on, which you can see in the photo at left. Her makeup had completely disappeared at that point, and the only makeup you can detect is the false lashes and a bit of frosty lip gloss. Her eyebrows received no attention, whereas some definition to the brows would have gone a long way. Some foundation and powder with moderate coverage (to smooth and even out her skin), richly pigmented blush (NARS, anyone?) and a pop of glossy, jewel-toned lip color, would have really made Gabby pop! I’ve seen Bobbi Brown do beautiful work on Black women before, so I don’t know if Bobbi was having an off night or just didn’t have the proper shades and products in her line to make Gabby up. What I do know is that Gabby was shortchanged and deserved far better makeup than this for her premier at the Golden Globes. I sincerely hope that she recruits another makeup artist for the SAG Awards and the Oscars (for which she better get a nomination!). Halle Berry was stunning as always, and I noticed her look had a subtle edge to it. Her pixie haircut was sexier and more tousled than usual (the handiwork of Oscar James, perhaps?), and her makeup had a pinky-golden glow. Halle typically goes for very natural makeup looks in shades of nude, pink, gold and brown (I don’t know that I’ve ever seen her wear a bold lip on the red carpet).
For this year’s Golden Globes, Halle had an ever-so-subtle smokey eye going on. Instead of a heavy look with black and gray, her smokey eye was achieved with shades of copper, bronze and golden brown. I think this is a wonderful take on the smokey eye, and will be giving this look a try this summer! Now, lets take a quick look at the other Brown Bombshells who made an appearance at the Golden Globes!
